It is a gentle gel on the gums, an anti-plaque aid that ensures complete oral hygiene by inhibiting the development of bacteria that form plaque.
Plaque is composed of millions of bacteria that cause the fermentation of food residues, thus producing acids that attack tooth enamel and cause cavities.
An unwanted consequence of bacterial plaque formation is gingivitis, characterized by redness and bleeding of the gums.
If neglected, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis: a recession of the gums that, in extreme cases, can lead to tooth loss.
Chlorhexidine may cause pigmentation on the tooth surface, easily removable at the dental office.
